Ace your ad agency interview

19 Aug

1217616675So you’re fresh out of school and you’ve managed to land yourself an interview at an ad agency. Congratulations! When your past experience is limited, it can sometimes be challenging to say impressing things. There’s a lot of old stand-bys that new grads often use. Set yourself apart by doing your homework and drawing from your insights to prove just how passionate about the ad business you really are.

1. Know more about the company than what’s on their website

Don’t say: “I noticed on your website that Copeland has been in business since 1980.”

Say: “I noticed on the T-CAAN website that you have a proprietary brand audit. How often do you use it?”

 2. Show your smarts

Don’t say: “I like watching the ads on TV more than the shows!”

Say: “I love the New York Fries campaign that uses ridiculous imagery to show how imitation is nothing like the real thing. It’s an engaging way to support the idea that their product is made from all-real ingredients and is therefore better.”

 3. Know the different agency departments and pick a career path

Don’t say: “I can’t wait to be coming up with great headlines, experimenting with new media and working with clients directly.”

Say: “As much as I have a strong creative passion and am media savvy, I want to start my career in account services, working towards managing campaigns and strategic direction.”

4. Get to know people in the local industry

Don’t say: “Wow, everyone that works here seems so cool!”

Say: “By the way, I know your art director John. I met him at a graphic design seminar. Mind if I go say hello?”

5. Talk about volunteer experiences

Don’t say: “I’ve wanted to work in advertising since forever!”

Say: “I’ve been passionate about advertising for a long time, starting with volunteering in the advertising department of the campus paper while I was in university.”

6. Ask smart questions

Don’t say: “So, is advertising like how it seems on TV?”

Say: “A recent article in Marketing Magazine said that consumers’ consumption of traditional media continues to fall as they use social media more and more. How has this affected the way that your agency builds campaigns?”
