Whenever one of our two power-suits – Account Managers – are out of town, it falls upon me, your hapless scribe, to try and sub for them.
I’m not naked, as when I’m pitching a radio spot to a client, but it’s ugly nonetheless.
Amanda Waye and Shane Goth are experienced client servicing stars. They are both graduates of the CAAP (Communications and Advertising Accredited Professionals) program. They are smart, buttoned down, fast on their feet and wonderfully tactful. But they take holidays, as Shane has been doing this week. I know I only have myself to blame, because my signature is on his vacation request form.
He assured me everything would be straightforward but of course all hell broke lose immediately.
My approach to client servicing could best be summed up as “instinctive”. If it feels good I do it, often mindless of the consequences and sometimes giving a fair impersonation of an elephant massaging his rump against the display cases in a crystal shop.
Oh I get things done. But the collateral damage must be riveting to those who work with me. I’m not supposed to admit this publicly, am I.
Witness me putting a rush estimate together for a client. Note the furrowed brows and hear the curses. Share in my amazement as the auto-populated form refuses to auto-populate!
I hear the sound of laughter coming from the creative department. It is not kind laughter.
Shane’s back Monday, right?
