Social Media Open House: who’s in?

9 Dec

Last night, Copeland hosted our first in a series of Open Houses on Social Media for local businesses.

Our goal was to share our knowledge of the SM landscape, to offer up some compelling reasons why it needs to be considered as part of your marketing mix, and to suggest how it can best be used to create relationships and enhance loyalty with your customers.

For the most part, the participants, from the hospitality and tourism sector, have already dipped their toes in the Social Media waters, with some Twitter and Facebook activity, and blogging. But, with a few notable exceptions, truly successful SM campaigns have yet to explode on the Island.

One of those exceptions is Rod Phillips at Liquor Plus, whose Twit Deals have earned him new customers and tremendous word of mouth. Follow him on Twitter, and read his blog to see Social Media in action.

If a theme emerged from the evening, as Rob Curtis from Hotel Rialto rightly noted, it was that LISTENING is the key to getting traction in these spaces. Then, engaging and offering value.

If you would like to be a participant in our next Social Media Open House, leave a comment here or email us at

My gratitude to JP Holecka for his research on Salt in Vancouver.

    I agree that

“If a theme emerged from the evening, as Rob Curtis from Hotel Rialto rightly noted, it was that LISTENING is the key to getting traction in these spaces. Then, engaging and offering value.”

but I also feel that most people don’t realise how much more effective they can make their lives and business by embracing the correct forms of social media as it allows you to react instantly to a market with much more precision in a much more cost effective manner.

Thank you again for last night.

Thank you Doug and Amanda for your expertise in this area! After just one evening with you we were able to take away great tips for effective social media marketing strategies that will help us to efficiently share hotel, tour and travel industry information and local favorite events with our followers. As well as how to LISTEN well, we will use appropriate etiquette in this style of communiction and be prepared for opportunities to learn from others in order to share valuable and relevant information in a timely fashion. It’s about the quality and consistency of authentic connections… We will also follow Jay Baer per your suggestion. Thanks again! And please stop by Abigail’s Hotel when you have a moment to visit. I would love to see you both. – Renu

Thanks for your comments Renu. It was a pleasure to have you in the group last night. Your take-aways from our conversation are a great encapsulation of the evening’s discussion.

You have established an inviting digital home for Abigail’s through your website, blog and twitter account and are in a perfect position to listen, engage and invite people in for a conversation.

We look forward to continuing the conversation with you Renu.
