Why are men portrayed as domestic morons?

21 Feb

You’ve seen the caricature often enough. Fumbling, bumbling Dad trying to manage a mop or destroying the kitchen in the course of trying to make a meal. Indulgent, smug wife (more on her later), rueful children shaking their heads in embarrassment.

What’s up with this? Are men really total boobs anywhere in the home outside of the TV room and the garage? Who’s to blame for this stereotype?

Turns out, it’s probably men.

According to this article, portraying male incompetence in the home serves to re-enforce the notion among both sexes that these tasks are best suited for women, thereby promoting the stay-at-home mom caricature (who, according to advertising, spends most of her alone time ecstatically moving from chore to chore, reveling in the effectiveness of her cleaning methods. Now for the dust on the tops of those ceiling fans!)

I used to throw things at the TV while I watched these inept men fail utterly to get the stains out of the bathtub. Now I see that it’s only a male conspiracy to keep women out of the workplace. Whew!

There are lot of other blog-worthy insights in that article too.

Hmmm… I never looked at it that way. We’re so sneaky.

I guess I’ve betrayed the Sneaky Male Code of Silence by whistle blowing on this…

You think this comes as a surprise to any women? HA!

The irony is a lot women end up working two shifts: one at the office and then again when they get home…and then if you have kids…I know I used to joke that there were days I needed a wife…

    So much for ‘liberation’
