Success is just the beginning

The province where I grew up has made quite a splash this week with the Regis and Kelly Show hitting the airwaves LIVE from Prince Edward Island. The province invested $1 million to attract the cutesy and incredibly popular show to the island of potatoes, red soil, Anne of Green Gables and that really tall chef Michael Smith from the Food Network.

Obviously PEI realized that having Regis and Kelly broadcast from ‘the island’ (if you lived there you would know it’s the only one on the planet) would give a boost to the tourism industry and the cache of all things PEI but did they realize they would be one of the top 10 Google searches on the first broadcast day? All I can say to my friends in PEI is well done and don’t lose this momentum. The hard work you have done to get this attention now has to be nurtured to seal the proverbial deal and get people to visit. There are a lot of online conversations going on about PEI right now and I hope that businesses are jumping in to take part in them to show that PEI is not only a great destination but a digital destination as well.

What I do know is that transplanted ‘Islanders’ all over the world now have another reason to spout the merits of PEI (you know red sandy beaches, golf courses of green and red, spectacular scenery, maritime hospitality) to anyone who will listen, not that we weren’t doing that before…

What a great self-promotion. It will be interesting to see comparative tourism figures for the summer. Wonder what they will do for a follow-up strategy? Maybe they’ll have to bring Kelly back and have her don the red pigtails and freckles for a TV campaign.

But maybe that’s a better fit for Regis.

I’ll certainly be watching for what comes next. It will also be interesting to see if this kind of promotion gets duplicated in other locations in Canada.
