Nautical Nellies serves up social media success

Nautical Nellies is taking social media to a new level in Victoria and shaking up the staid local scene in the process.

The first hint that the restaurant was not afraid to take some risks came with the recent introduction of their remarkable sushi menu.

That sushi is creative and seriously good. Everybody I know who has tried it has flipped.

Now comes their pioneering foray into social media. Not content with merely tweeting their way into the community here, Nautical Nellies champions social media at every customer touchpoint.

Therefore, when you head to their prime location at Broughton and Wharf, you are greeted by Facebook and Twitter symbols on their door, a massive FourSquare check-in welcome banner, logos on all on their menus, and electronic signage by the host stand that touts their social media presence.

Is this the leading edge of the next big thing for retailers? Or the bleeding edge of a trend that won’t have any staying power?

Whatever your opinion, Nautical Nellies is shaking things up. Bravo.

    Thanks for the kind words about Nellies Doug. Indeed, Jeff (owner) is a pioneer in many ways, including his strategic approach to leveraging social media to create genuine and lasting customer relationships.

    Having said that these are early days for retailers using social media in Victoria. So to answer your question, yes, I believe this is the next big thing for retailers. You only have to look at retailers like Rocky Mountain Soap and Liquor Plus (among others) to see what successful social media looks like. Watch for more compelling SM campaigns in the coming months.

    It’s a tough road for the pioneers isn’t it Chris, because the numbers aren’t quite there yet. But we can expect FourSquare to continue to explode and the early adopters on the consumer side will not forget their counterparts on the retail end of things.

    Now, all Nautical Nellies needs is iPads at the host stand so you can order your drink and appetizer before you sit down, and tweet directly from there…which means you can put your damn mobile away!
