Social media doesn’t belong in traditional news

30 Aug

More and more, I see TV news clips that feature YouTube videos. Newspaper articles that quote Wikipedia and tweets. I don’t think I like it.

I look to traditional news outlets to provide me credible information and thoughtful analysis, often from a local perspective. That’s their advantage over web-based content. When news references social media, they put their credibility at risk, and will never be as timely as web sources.

I understand that social media is a part of many of our daily lives, and traditional news needs to recognize that. But I believe the best place for a news organization to quote a tweet is on their own Twitter feed, not in a printed article or broadcast story. This allows for greater timeliness, while not exposing their printed/broadcast medium to risk of misinformation.
