Pavement Patty: the 3-D speed bump

10 Sep

West Vancouver is playing around with a brave and controversial idea to get drivers to slow down. The’ve just launched Pavement Patty, a 2-D image of a child playing that has 3-D realism.

The full effect hits the driver at a distance of about 100 feet. By the time you are close enough to cream the kid, the image is merely an elongated 2-D illustration.

Neat idea. Will it work?

I suspect it will the first few times you encounter it and then you’ll take it as you would any other speed bump: at your usual pace.

The key question is will it numb drivers to the real kids out playing?
