Photographic proof of unaided human flight

10 Jan

Look, up in the air…it’s a bird…it’s a plane…

No, it’s Daniel Gordon.

I spied this amazing photo series in National Geographic last month and spent some time on the photographer’s website this weekend checking out his “Flying Pictures” series.

This crazy guy actually launched himself into the air, without landing pads, hundreds of times to capture these photos. He framed the pics, took the leap, and his assistant, visible in the last one in shadow, snapped the shutter.

This series says “damn digital” to me. Daniel Gordon could have done all this painlessly on his Mac, but instead chose the unaltered route. Imagine the moment after the shutter clicked.

Props to the man.

You’re very welcome Michela. The more I look at this work, the more I think of it as performance art with a big, impossible-to-ignore hook. Cheers.

I would really like to see Daniel Gordon do it off the water, with no aid. I had thought of him doing it off a building but the mess would have to be cleaned up by some poor sod at street level.

There is a photo of Daniel on his website flying out of a second floor window, which might satisfy your tastes.
