Victoria’s Up and Comers, Part 1

23 Mar

This is the first in a series of 6 posts that hopes to bring some promising local grads and current students to the attention of the larger business community.

DAN MACDONALD: A comic book illustrator with an entrepreneur’s instinct for the kill.

EDUCATION: BComm from U Vic

SKILLS: Illustrator, fashion and jewelry creator, entrepreneur

CURRENT COMPANY: Dead Celebrities

When Dan was 17 he got the gig of every teenage comic book lovers dream: a summer internship in LA with the legendary comic mogul Marc Silvestri at Top Cow Productions.

Appreciating that his idol was also an astute business owner convinced Dan to get a business degree, which he recently completed at U Vic’s renowned Gustavson School of Business.

While still a student, he formed his own company, Dead Celebrities, which pairs his own illustrative art with high-end T-shirts on an e-commerce platform.

The peak for his business happened a few weeks ago when the Charlie Sheen explosion got all over us. Dan’s entrepreneurial mindset kicked in and he responded with a limited edition T that perfectly captured the mood of the week.

Dan’s a doer. He takes business art, fashion and pop culture, throws them in a blender and hits Liquify.

UPDATE: On October 3, 2011, Dan started full-time with Spring Advertising in Vancouver after a successful internship with DDB Vancouver!

I applaud your initiative Doug to give an online exposure to very talented individuals in Victoria that need to be discovered here and abroad!

I am following Dan on Twitter and I am a fan of his Facebook page. Even if I had a good idea of his online persona, I feel that I had a better (and genuine) understanding of his skills and expertise by reading a blog written by an objective person!

I am sure Dan will become a successful entrepreneur! I’ll be following you Dan (not in a stalking way ;o))! Now, time for me, to buy a Dead Celebrities T-shirt to add to my collection!

I think we all have a huge responsibility to students and grads Asmaa.

Also, if Advertising sits on the sidelines and waits for the knocks on the door in the arrogant manner it always has, we will lose out on the all these smart, resourceful people. Because they have so many options now.

    That’s enough motivation!

I wish I met someone with your motivation Doug when I started 11 years ago ;o)

Asmaa: thank you for the kind words and the vote of confidence. Messages like these make all of the difference in the world when trying to get something started.

Doug: you truly are making a huge difference in the lives of the students and grads on the island; they won’t forget it.

    And I welcome stalkers.

Dan, at some stage in our lives we are all 22 or 23 and trying to find our place in the workforce.

When you meet smart, talented people, you want to just get that story out there cleanly. Which is what good advertising should aspire to as well: Tell the truth and stay out of the way. Good luck to you man. I wish I’d had a fraction of your talent when I got going.
