Student competition: Become our Managing Director for a day

12 Sep

You’re into advertising, right? You also love the idea of being the boss?

Man, do we have the gig for you!

Copeland business card for Managing Director 4 A Day contest

Enter our Managing Director 4 A Day contest and run our ad agency.

We really get into helping students out (not just zombie interns). So we’re holding a contest to identify a future leader here in our industry. Is it you?

You will spend the entire day managing our ad agency. You’ll run the start-of-the-week meeting. You will get to meet with senior clients. You will be involved in strategic and creative brainstorms. You will tweet as Copeland. You will deal with resources, pressing deadlines, staff fist-fights.

You will sit in my office, in my chair and run things your way. Check here for more details.

You are currently a full-time student. Doesn’t matter where you study or what you study. The contest is open to any student 16 years of age and over.

Think you have leadership potential? Want to find out what it really feels like to run a company? This is your chance.

Tell us why you are the right person for the job.

Why would you make a good ad agency manager? You can make a video (two minutes max), write a blog post (200 words) or submit your candidacy by email (ditto on the 200 words) to state your case. This is advertising so preference will be given to those entries that demonstrate creativity and an understanding of persuasive selling.

Douglas Magazine Editor Brian Hartz and Kathi Springer, VP Communication and Corporate Relations of The Pace Group will help us select 3 finalists. We will then submit those for a 72-hour public vote on our Facebook page. The finalist who gets the most votes gets the gig!

Oh, one more thing. The winner will also get $500.

Not bad for a day’s work.

We will be accepting entries from now until 5pm on Friday September 23. Bring yours to my attention however you like:

  • email me at
  • tweet the entry to @yourcopeland
  • or find some other creative way to direct us to you what you’ve done.

Finalists will be posted on our Facebook page at 9am Wednesday, September 28, with the winner being announced on Monday morning, October 3. Your day at the helm will be Monday October 17. (We will have you in beforehand to go over the schedule and familiarize you with the job.)

Get working on your entry and good luck!

    Staff fist-fights… that’s so cool.

  2. Doug Brown September 12, 2011 at 3:01 pm #

They’re the best. And the new open-office environment means way better viewing.

Can’t wait to see this unfold!

Stephan if you have contacts at Capilano University, please share the post with them! Be great to have some entries from Vancouver.

Thanks for saying so Sarah! Hey, looks like we both have Lolas running around our houses…

Great contest. Wish I was still in school. I would have loved an opportunity to steer the Copeland ship. Yarrr.

Sadly our fist fights have roughly halved since you left to work at Eclipse Lindsey. 😦 Our loss, their gain.

roughly halved eh? What can I say, I liked keeping you guys on your toes.

Yep, we had to float like butterflies around you. Even the big fellers. Hey, it’s pretty funny how your name changed from one comment to the next.

I felt a little weird about nicknaming myself.

Awesome opportunity, love all the Copeland contests! Although, I am not sure a poor little student will be able to handle a day in your director shoes Doug… you are kind of super-human or a zombie who doesn’t have to sleep and is able to pack that much more into 24 hours!

Props to you and Copeland for finding another creative way to introduce students to the business, Doug!

  14. Doug Brown September 15, 2011 at 10:42 am #

    > Poor little student huh Ciara? Most of the students I’ve met go out clubbing after a long day of work, whereas I collapse into my hyperbaric chamber with a warm glass of milk.

    > Thanks for the props Cynthia. I appreciate you leaving the comment!

  15. Terrance Lam September 19, 2011 at 8:32 pm #

I need to find a mini-me to send into your bullpen 🙂

  16. Doug Brown September 19, 2011 at 8:56 pm #

You must have a school full of them Terrance. Hope we have some Pacific Design Academy entries…having already won the Zombie Intern Contest, you guys have a reputation to maintain!
