Skewering the world’s last dictator

29 Nov

Out of South Africa this week comes a TV commercial for Nando’s grilled chicken restaurants – the same one that’s on the corner of Government and Pandora here in Victoria.

This cheeky, hilarious spot lampoons Zimbabwe’s iron-fisted ruler Robert Mugabe, who sits alone in his dining room at Christmas, glumly remembering the good times with his fellow dictatorial buddies, Muammar Gadaffi, Saddam Hussein, PW Botha and Idi Amin.

When you’re done chuckling, note that this is really just a traditional product and price ad – they’re actually trying to sell something. It survives repeated viewings beautifully and while only a few days old, has already chocked up 440,000+ views on YouTube.

Clearly somebody is executing an exceptional digital and PR strategy around this entertaining spot.

Check out Nando’s whimsical website too. It’s almost as much fun as the TV ad.

woops looks like I got in the slow lane this time.
Im not surprised considering how weird yet funny Nandos commercials get. Always crack me up even though Ive never been there.

Well Mr.Mugabe does look quite lonely there at a dinner table for 8. Haven’t tried Nandos so I wouldn’t mind trying. But I just had dinner so Im too full to think about food at the moment haha.

I have to admit I actually paid the place a visit after seeing the commercial. Brave advertising should be rewarded! Meal was pretty good.

As an advertisement thats memorable they sure hit it cause its just bloody hilarious. Not to mention they manage to incorporate it nicely into their business. Unlike Dairy Queens commercials….it feels like a rip off of the Old Spice commercial….
I sure hope it was cause for an ad that is that good they better serve good food or they’ve got their priorities wrong…
I still wonder how the heck they managed to get a Crusader II tank in there…
